Free will and intelligent machines

چکیده

This paper presents an analysis of the application of the philosophical concept of free will to intelligent machines. It is argued that we need to transfer the concept to a more empirical approach in philosophy in order to be able to answer questions about the design of intelligent systems that are required to operate in areas of society where the concept of free will is necessary. Therefore, free will is viewed as a social or relational concept. The relations between intelligent machines and their environment are defined in terms of interaction points on the knowledge level and the dialogue level. Based on a case study into case-based reasoning and the CREEK system developed at NTNU in Trondheim, these relations are analysed from both an actornetwork and a phenomenological perspective. According to the actor-network approach, we can inscribe properties into artefacts. This leads to a framework for modelling free will in intelligent machines, founded on the tension between what a machine ‘can’ do and what it ‘will’ do, or on the connection between hermeneutic and existential views in phenomenology. Phenomenology also provides the possibility for evaluation of the mediation machines can perform in the relation between humans and reality, which is necessary if we are introducing machines in decision-making. This view is linked to the perspective of free will issues. Some evaluative remarks are given based on the analysis of casebased reasoning and CREEK.

Mathematical Modeling for a Flexible Manufacturing Scheduling Problem in an Intelligent Transportation System

This paper presents a new mathematical model for a production system through a scheduling problem considering a material handling system as an intelligent transportation system by automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The traditional systems cannot respond to the changes and customer’s demands and for this reason, a flexible production system is used. Therefore, for this purpose, automated transpor...

Ethical Preference-Based Decision Support Systems

The future will see autonomous intelligent systems acting in the same environment as humans, in areas as diverse as driving, assistive technology, and health care. Think of self-driving cars, companion robots, and medical diagnosis support systems. Also, humans and machines will often need to work together and agree on common decisions. Thus hybrid collective decision making systems will be in ...

Intelligent machines in the twenty - ̄ rst century : foundations of inference and inquiry

The last century saw the application of Boolean algebra to the construction of computing machines, which work by applying logical transformations to information contained in their memory. The development of information theory and the generalization of Boolean algebra to Bayesian inference have enabled these computing machines, in the last quarter of the twentieth century, to be endowed with the...

Toward Question-Asking Machines: The Logic of Questions and the Inquiry Calculus

For over a century, the study of logic has focused on the algebra of logical statements. This work, first performed by George Boole, has led to the development of modern computers, and was shown by Richard T. Cox to be the foundation of Bayesian inference. Meanwhile the logic of questions has been much neglected. For our computing machines to be truly intelligent, they need to be able to ask re...
